What we do
Make it happen
Great ideas can often feel big and complex. We can help you make sense of the array of options and map out a route to making your ideas happen and we can then guide you through it.
Make it last
Great ideas need to last. It's no good if your shiny new community centre has boards over the windows in five years because it can't cover its costs, or your new play area is vandalised in 6 months time because it wasn't sited in the right place. We can help develop your ideas and make them viable - that is financially, socially and environmentally sustainable.
Make a difference
Great ideas need focus. Do you have clear outcomes? Do you know how you can demonstrate to yourself and others that you're achieving them? We can help you engage people to ensure that there is a strong 'buy-in' with your ideas and we can help you set clear outcomes and find ways of measuring them, to show how you are making a difference.
Who we work for
We are commissioned by the public, private and third sectors for work as diverse as country-wide funding programmes, with organisations such as the BIG Lottery and Forestry Commission Wales, to feasibility studies and project development commissions at community level, to micro-contracts delivering bespoke workshops and training for indiviudal third sector organisations.
Whatever your needs, large or small, get in touch and we can talk them through and find a solution for you. We're always happy to have a chat over a cup of tea to try and help find something that suits you.
The sorts of things we do
All project needs are different, and we prefer to discuss your needs directly with you and come up with something tailored to fit your ideas. But to give you an idea of the types of support that we offer, you can see some of the things that we might do with you.
Underlining all good initiatives will be a sound knowledge base and effective engagement (involvement) of the right people.
We use:
- Trained expert researchers with extensive experience.
- Market Research Society guidance on best practice.
- Tools and techniques appropriate to the respondents.
- Mixed methods of quantitative and qualitative approaches.
- Tried and tested methodologies but using fresh techniques, including:
- interactive ICT surveys
- e-surveys
Effective stakeholder engagement and consultation are fundamental to delivering effective, sustainable regeneration projects. To meet the needs of your project, we can tailor a solution appropriate to its size and scope and suitable to your available budgets.
We have a strong track record of research and consultation work with a range of clients, including work with Oxford University, BIG Lottery, Forestry Commission Wales, All Wales Ethnic Minorities Association (AWEMA) and local authorities, as well as for smaller community projects as part of feasibility work or socio-economic market research.
We can help you to develop strategies and policies that don't just sit on a shelf. We will:
- Help you clarify exactly what it is you want to achieve
- Identify stakeholders to whom the strategy/policy will apply
- Engage those stakeholders to create a strategy/policy relevant to them
- Incorporate learning of what has and hasn't worked elsewhere
- Ensure that the strategy/policy has indicators for success that are deliverable and measurable
- Develop with you appropriate means of monitoring and evaluating progress
We have developed:
- Public and community engagement strategies
- Strategies for change for youth facilities
- Compacts between the public and voluntary sectors
- Urban regeneration and neighbourhood renewal strategies
- Youth arts strategies
- Environmental sustainability policies and strategies
- Corporate Social Responsibility strategies
We have worked in all of these areas and more for a variety of clients from large public sector bodies to thematic partnerships, to small social enterprises and SMEs. Some examples of our work include reviewing the Compact agreement between the City and County of Swansea and the Third Sector, carrying out research and making policy recommendations to AWEMA and the Welsh Assembly Government in relation to childcare issues faced by ethnic minorities in Wales; work with Oxford University on a Public and Community Engagement Strategy; developing the Swansea Youth Arts Strategy; and, developing Strategies for Change for Young People's Facilities in England as part of the myplace support team for BIG Lottery and DCSF.
Good evaluation needs to be clear, focused, relevant and robust. We will:
- Help you set outcomes and the means of measuring them
- Develop an approach appropriate to your project/programme
- Be clear what the evaluation will and won't be able to tell you
- Ensure that a range of people ('stakeholders') are effectively engaged
- Use a variety of evaluation tools, suitable to the task
- Ensure that the evaluation is focused, with a small number of indicators
We have extensive experience of evaluation work from small, short-term projects, to substantial long-term programmes. We have worked on nationwide evaluations for programmes supported by the BIG Lottery, Forestry Commission Wales and WCVA. We have also delivered evaluations on a regional scale such as the Swansea Bay Deprived Areas Fund and Collaborative Communities programmes. But we can also do small pieces of work such as our evaluation of the Swansea Recycling Project, and our recent work with Reach the Heights projects.
We can also provide support and advice for you to self-evaluate as a provider of the Indicate TM self-evaluation support system developed by Hall Aitken.
We can help you in delivering effective public sector regeneration programmes. We can:
- Create effective links between the public, private and third sectors
- Identify and meaningfully engage stakeholder groups
- Support potential applicants in developing funding proposals
- Add value to funded projects by providing expert support
- Design and administer small grants schemes
- Project-manage regeneration projects from inception to completion
We provided programme support to the Forestry Commission Wales for their £16m Objective One funded Cydcoed programme, working with over 40 projects across South Wales. We assisted groups to access the funding and supporting funded projects in reaching physical, financial and administrative completion. We are also working with Hall Aitken supporting grant recipients under the BIG Lottery's Way of Life funding programme in Wales, and BIG's £270m myplace capital funding programme in England. On a smaller scale, we have project-managed a number of projects, festivals and events; examples include the annual Ty Agored Abertawe Open House, and the financial planning and management of the first two international Dylan Thomas Prizes for literature. We have also devised and managed small grants schemes for several clients, for example Gorseinon College.
We can help you to develop and deliver viable projects. We carry out:
- Feasibility studies
- Strategic reviews and business audits
- Business and marketing plannign support
- Exit strategies from funding
- One to one support and mentoring
We have undertaken a wide range of feasibility studies for community projects, including multicultural facilties, community centres, arts centres, galleries and women's centres. We have carried out strategic reviews of organisations such as Swansea Environmental Forum and Friends of the Young Disabled. We have carried out audits for several community organisations and with the Forestry Commission Wales for some of its Cydcoed funded projects. We worked on an exit strategy with the Healthy Directions Healthy Living Centre in Swansea; one of the few Healthy Living Centres to secure a future following cessation of their grant funding. Our troubleshooting work, by its nature, requires confidentiality but we have resolved financial issues for funded projects, assisted in developing full cost recovery programmes, improving governance structures, and devising marketing solutions and product development and diversification for various social enterprises.
